A plan for curious people: the Mercat dels Porxes (Porches Market) of Benissa

Benissa, a municipality in the north of the province of Alicante, has lots of things to discover and one of them is its Mercat dels Porxes, which takes place on the Second Saturday of the month.

The Mercat dels Porxes (Porches Market)

A market that takes place in Plaça Jaume I, where the Porxes (Porches) were located, a covered space where the market was held in the past. According to oral memory, one of these porches was destroyed during the Civil War by a tank driven by a solider of the International Brigade.

Meeting point for slow food

This market, a meeting point for people who follow the slow food philosophy, is a real benchmark for people who consume local produce, or “km 0” foods. This is a trend aimed at consuming seasonal produce, from close to the area where you live, which reduces the ecological footprint. It is thus about consumption that is environmentally responsible and sustainable, as many of the products found in the Mercat dels Porxes have not been treated with chemical fertilisers.

Organic and craft products

Among the products to be found are organic products such as fruits and vegetables, cheeses, cold meats, honey, oil, craft beer... The food market is complemented with craftwork, such as dolls and bibs for children, ceramics, bracelets and leather wallets, costume jewellery...

In addition to being able to purchase these organic and craft products, you can enjoy live music, popular dances, craft workshops, a children´s theatre with puppets, which gives this market a very special atmosphere.

Visit to the Cathedral of Marina Alta and the historic centre of Benissa

On the other hand, and given that you are in Benissa, we recommend visiting the Cathedral of Marina Alta, which is next to the market, a Neo-Gothic church from the start of the 20th century, which stands out as one of the largest churches in the province of Marina Alta. Delve into the historic centre of Benissa and visit the places that will transport you to another era.

Lastly, if you come to enjoy Benissa in summer, on Sundays in July you can enjoy the Mercat de la Terra (Market of the Land) in the car park of Playa de la Fustera, a market that is very similar to that of Los Porxes, but simply in a different setting.

We encourage you to come visit us, we won´t disappoint.
