Benissa features an Alicante University campus in two of its most imposing manor houses

The manor houses of the most powerful families in Benissa were built around the former fortified church of Saint Peter and along calle Puríssima, especially during the 18th century. The most interesting ones include the Andrés Family House and the Pere Bigot House, which currently host an Alicante University campus in the Marina Alta, which offers a wide selection of courses.

The Andrés Family House was built between the late 18th century and the early 19th century on one of the largest plots of land in the town centre of Benissa, and it is the only urban palace between party walls in Benissa from that time period. It is deemed to be one of the finest examples of manor houses in the Marina region. It is, in fact, one of the most fascinating samples of civil architecture from the period in the entire Valencia region .

On the other hand, the most interesting thing about the Pere Bigot House, the fact that it is a unique building notwithstanding, is the personality of one of its long-time residents, Pedro Ivars Sala. Born in the Berdica rural district in 1901, he was known as “Pere Bigot” by the locals. He emigrated to the United States when he was 16 years old and eventually returned with a wealth of fascinating stories. He spent most of his time playing the accordion, dressing up and telling stories about his time in America to any who would listen, especially children and young people, who enjoyed his jokes and good cheer. He collected all sorts of objects throughout the year which he then used to decorate the front of his house, creating many an acclaimed composition. The Town Hall gave his name to the narrow alley that runs in front of his house in 1983 in recognition of his popularity among the local townspeople.
