The cold is coming, bringing us sunny, clear bright days, red-tinted sunsets and attractive landscapes in their most autumnal version, … and, to warm up, there is nothing like a stew accompanied by a glass of wine in good company.
After the grape harvest, and with the arrival of the cold weather, it is time to enjoy a good wine.
To taste it with great enthusiasm, we recommend that you first discover one of the exclusive routes in the town, the one that goes through the Vall de Pop (Pop valley), passing through the vineyards of the area and along agricultural roads away from traffic.
Moreover, now is the time when the colours of autumn are at their most vibrant. During the sunniest hours, the earth shines red and the vines are tinged with ochre tones. Along the MTB muscatel route or on the Molí del Quisi route, you can admire the terraced landscapes that characterize our orography. Many of them have vineyards where the Muscatel grape grows, used to make the famous sweet wine of the same name. In fact, in Benissa there are two greatly appreciated autochthonous grape varieties, the Muscat of Alexandria and the Giró.
If you like oenology, you can contact the Celler Joan de la Casa or the Uvas Cabrera winery to arrange an appointment to taste the sweet wines produced in Benissa. Then, you can continue admiring the beauty of the town’s terraced landscapes. The first winery is in Benimarraig district and the second in Benimallunt.
As for walking tours, the Moscatel route and the Molí del Quisi route are just two among many other recommendations. Without leaving the wine-growing theme, we can also opt for the ruta de los riuraus, which passes through some of the most distinguished examples of these constructions that were once used to dry raisins. It is a circular route of about 9 km that allows us to admire 8 private riuraus.
These options represent the best physical exercise for an autumn weekend getaway that includes going for a walk with your family, as a couple, with friends, with your pet...with the added bonus that, afterwards, tradition has it that you enjoy an aperitif in the sun in one of the bars with terraces in the centre of Benissa. As for lunch, it’s up to you. There is a wide range of options in the town, with no need to take the car; … and, you know, you should make the most of it and get to know first-hand the local cuisine. The bars and restaurants offer menus that include an arrangement of various starters as a tasting of some of their star dishes, such as Espencat, Figatells, Pilota de puchero, Les Coquetes, Octopus stew, tuna belly with onions... Don't let anyone tells you about it, come and experience it yourself!
