The former mayor’s residence is now a highly beautiful architectural space that hosts the municipal library and the modern art museum
This double public space is hosted in the former Cases del Battle, which owe their name to the fact that they hosted the mayor of the Town of Benissa. It is a series of two stately homes on numbers 38 and 40 of Calle Puríssima.
The houses date back to the 16th century, and they were purchased by the Town Hall in 1998 in order to bring them back to their former splendour. Renovations spanned an entire decade, and during the process eight 11th century silos, which were probably part of the Muslim farmstead that once stood here, were discovered.
Behind these ancient walls lies the Bernat Capó Municipal Library and the Salvador Soria Modern Art Space, which hosts the municipal collection of winning works from the painting contest named after this artist, who passed away in Benissa.
